What Is a Duvet Insert?

If you are a cold sleeper or you live in an area where the nights can be inhospitably cold, then you have probably seen a duvet insert before. This is a piece of bedding that is designed to be inserted in the duvet cover of your choice, though there are some that are made to be used on its own.

Duvet inserts come in a variety of weights, each one offering a different level of warmth to the user. You will find most duvet inserts having either natural or synthetic fill. It is up to you to decide which would give you the most comfort.

In choosing a duvet insert, the most important consideration to keep in mind is the fill. Make sure that it is not too thick that it would cause you to wake up all sweaty, nor is it too thin that it won’;t give you any warmth.

Duvet Inserts vs. Comforters

Now that you know what a duvet insert is, are you wondering how it differs from a comforter? Many before you had, which is why we are going to clear this up right here and now, for once and for all.

A comforter is a fluffy piece of blanket that is thick and quilted and is used as a top blanket. It is often used with a thin blanket or sheet underneath. More often than not, a comforter has a synthetic fiberfill, such as  cotton or polyester. It is then quilted or stitched in such a way that the fill stays in place.
14
You will find comforters being sold as part of a set, often packaged with sheets and pillowcases that match the size of the mattress. This means that a comforter is meant to be the final piece of the bedding ensemble, requiring no other accessory.

On the other hand, a duvet insert is a much thinner version of a comforter. This flatter, soft version is not supposed to be quilted or stitched, although some are sold as such.

Duvet inserts, as the name suggests, are meant to be inserted in a duvet cover. You will often find duvet inserts being sold separately, allowing you to mix and match them with your sheet and duvet cover of choice.

Who Should Use a Duvet Insert?

A duvet insert is an important piece of bedding, especially for those who live in areas that experience too-cold winters. Using a duvet insert is also advised to those who tend to sleep cold and want a piece of bedding that could effectively keep them warm.
13
Who else should use a duvet insert?

  • Elderly
In most cases, older people are the ones who suffer from cold nights. Without the proper kind of blanket to cover their bodies, they experience joint and muscle pains upon waking up in the morning. A duvet insert, paired with a quality duvet cover, would solve this problem.

  • Cold Sleepers
There are instances when a person feels the cold more than the next guy. If you are like this type of person, then you probably need a duvet insert to keep you warm and comfortable as you sleep.

  • Anyone
If you simply like to give your bedroom a quick makeover, a duvet insert is a good piece of accessory that you can make use of. Simply insert it in a beautiful duvet cover that matches your bedroom décor, and you’;d have achieved your dream bedroom. What’;s more, you can just as easily change the cover whenever you want to!

What Key Features to Look For When Buying a Duvet Insert

A duvet insert is an important part of your bedding ensemble, which is why you have to take your time when trying to pick one. There are a lot of things to keep in mind, but you don’;t have to feel overwhelmed. Like what we’;ve been telling you, we’;ve got your back.
11
Below, we have listed the key features to look for when it comes to buying a duvet insert.

  • Fill Type
The first thing that you have to decide on is the type of fill that you want your duvet insert to have. Generally speaking, you have two options: natural or synthetic. If your main concern is warmth, then go for a duvet insert with natural down fill.

Down is the inner plumage of ducks and geese used to trap body heat, which is why this is a great fill type of choice if you want warmth. The problem with natural down fill is that it can be quite expensive. If you’;re on a budget, you might want to try a duvet insert with down alternative fill instead.

Most down alternative fills are made of either synthetic materials, such as polyester, or natural fibers, like wool or cotton. This should be the fill type of choice if you suffer from allergies.

  • Fill Power
Fill power refers to the size of the down clusters used. This ranges from 500 to 900. A higher fill power means that the duvet insert is fluffier, lighter, and less dense. This means it can provide better insulation. Go for goose down comforter instead of duck down if you want greater fill power.

  • Fill Weight
As mentioned, duvet inserts with a higher fill power are less dense, which is why they also often have a lower fill weight. If you want a duvet insert that has some level of firmness, then go for one with a higher fill weight.

  • Tog Rating
The type of duvet insert you buy should also depend on whether it’;s summer or winter. This is where the tog rating comes in. This refers to the overall thermal insulation that the duvet insert can offer. This rating ranges from 1 to 18. A duvet insert that is rated low is more appropriate for use during the summer months, while those with a higher tog rating is the perfect duvet insert for winter.

  • Construction
As you may have noticed from the duvet inserts we have reviewed earlier, they come in a variety of construction types. There are duvet inserts that feature a sewn-through construction, baffle-box design, or channel construction. You’;d also find gusseted duvet inserts.

If you think that this is just about how the duvet insert looks, you’;re wrong. The construction affects whether or not the fill shifts in the duvet. A sewn-through duvet insert features the top and bottom layers bound together in a box pattern. On the other hand, the baffle-box design allows for more loft. It uses fabric strips to keep the fill in place.

As the name suggests, a duvet insert with a channel design features channels’’ or parallel seams. These allow you to shift the fill to different parts of the duvet. This type of duvet construction is recommended for those who share a duvet insert with a partner, for example.

Lastly, gusseted duvets are those with fabric walls’’. These were added to provide the duvet with a higher loft. They can be achieved using either sewn-through or baffle-box construction.

  • Shell Material
The next consideration to keep in mind is the material used in making the shell. This is where thread count comes in. The key thing to remember is that a higher thread count may not always be what you need.

A duvet insert with a high thread count means that the fabric is weaved tightly. As such, the fill material won’;t be able to escape from the shell. For this, find a duvet insert made of a fabric with at least a 250 thread count, which means it would keep the fill inside effectively. A higher count is not necessary since you would still use a duvet cover.

  • Size
Similar to sheets, you also need to think of the size of duvet insert you want to buy. Those who share their duvet with a partner should buy a duvet insert and duvet cover that is one size bigger than their mattress. In this way, you can be sure that there is enough duvet to cover both your bodies.

Thankfully, you can find duvet inserts and duvet covers in a wide range of sizes, from twin to king and even California king.

  • Care and Cleaning
Although this is the very last thing we have listed, this doesn’;t mean that you should take this factor for granted. After all, the care and cleaning requirements of the duvet insert you buy will determine whether or not you would want to use it on the regular.

When it comes to new duvet inserts, keep in mind that you would have to wait for at least 72 hours before it reaches its maximum fluffiness and loft. This rule is the same in all duvet inserts that arrives in a vacuum-sealed package. If you wish to prolong the time in between washes, you might want to use a duvet cover. This usually comes with buttons or zippers to secure the duvet insert. Unlike the duvet insert, it is easier to machine wash and dry duvet covers.

To make sure that you are not damaging your duvet insert due to improper care, take the time to read the care instructions provided with your purchase. You might also want to take advantage of the customer support service that the manufacturer offers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you still have questions regarding duvet inserts? We’;re sure you do! Here are some commonly asked questions to clear up some more things for you.
12

  • How do you put on a duvet cover?
To insert the duvet insert into the duvet cover, first turn the cover inside out. Then, lay it on the bed, making sure that the opening is at the bottom. Put the duvet insert on top of the duvet cover, and then tie them together at each corner.

Once you’;ve done that, roll the two layers together, starting from the top. Upon reaching the bottom part, reach in and turn the corners outside in. Button or zip it up, unroll it, give it a little shake, and you’;re good to go!

  • Should the duvet insert be larger than the cover?
Generally speaking, if you want a duvet that has a snug fit, you should buy a duvet insert that is two inches bigger than your cover on all sides.

  • Do you really need a duvet cover?
The answer to this depends on your personal preferences and the type of duvet insert that you have. If you wish to sleep under a fresh duvet every single night, then you might want to use a duvet cover. This is because you can easily change the duvet cover whenever you want to. This cover protects the duvet insert from dust, dust mites, mold, and mildew.
